The "Editors" behind Guardie should be commended for their role in adding to the social architecture of the campus, our only hope is that more students come on board and dispite the language, make their own sense of the postings.

Firstly, Guardie would not appear to be an unbiased publication if nine out of ten posts are diatribes about the UGSS, yet thanks for helping us look at ourselves.
Secondly, there is a Maintenance Division and an Estate Supervisor who are charged with the care of our campus grounds. Over the years the UGSS has taken some of the responsiblities of these entities and there is an impression that we are in charge of that.
Yet, it would be remiss of us not to give blame also to the heavy rains.
In conclusion, as we set about building a new UGSS for a new age we continue to invite students [such as yourselves] across the campus to come onboard with us.
We cannot count the hours the Executives spent dealing with myriad student issues as we championed student power and student responsibility both at the Academic Board and Council; two of the highest decision making bodies at the university.
Finally, the arc of the history of our University is long, but we can all put our hands to it presently and bend to a brighter day.
Every hand is needed to help build this University. The students of this University are like an answer running to a question of our time.
Let us make our time count.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, allow me (a pedantic self diagnosed Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder patient with nothing better to do) to correct you...
the word is DESPITE. with an 'e' not an 'i'. You are a communication student. I'd like to assume should know this. 'e' and 'i' are far from each other on any keyboard or pad so don't even say its a typo.
Secondly, it is recommended that you abandon parallel structure and desist from utilising the word 'firstly'. It is a bit antiquated. 'first' should be used instead. Pardon me if I am mistaken and have things reversed.
What on earth are they teaching you in Communication? I think they should recommend that you people take a minor in English.
And what is wrong with "Guardie's" language? If it is the use of the guyanese vernacular (creole), you should probably check today's article in the water falls paper pertinent to Dave Martins. HE says (clears throat)
"dont be ashamed of your dialect, it is a powerful (means of) communication...it's a language, it's not ignorance"
Once again...you as a communication student should know this. We (contributors of Guardie) CAN utilise the "creen's english' so chill out. loosen some buttons. RELAX (you definitely need to learn the meaning of this word)Google it.
Moving along to more important matters...
I maintain that Guardie may not be 100% unbiased, but Guardie definitely represents the point of view of the fraction of the campus population that I interact with. So in that regard, I'd like to extrapolate the antithesis of your assumption and posit that Guardie represents (with a few minor exceptions) the impartial students' perspective of You, the students, the administration, the dogs and yes, your entire executive body.
No one has said that it is your responsibility. But obviously the few paved meters we have to traverse in order to get to spicy dish, or to YOU, is flooded by more than just rain water. Its not your responsibility to make sure the water isn't there. However, it IS your responsibility to raise it with the Maintenance Division or the Estate Supervisor. The campus is huge, and though it may appear to many that they have nothing much to do, maybe the Maintenance Department overlooked that little patch below spicy dish. How about you at least call them up? Offer a suggestion of sorts if you have any. THAT, Sir, is YOUR job.
